Gary Thompson

Founder of Cables & Cameras CIC

Gary Thompson, founder of Cables & Cameras CIC, is a cultural curator and advocate dedicated to amplifying under-represented voices, particularly within the film industry. Established in 2018 at Bristol’s Cube Microplex, Cables & Cameras is a Community Interest Company focused on addressing the lack of POC representation in film, a need highlighted by reports like the Looking Glass Survey 2024.

Cables & Cameras hosts regular screenings and large-scale events, creating a hub for filmmakers and creatives of color to showcase their work and build networks. Beyond film screenings, the organization also produces films, formally documenting and sharing diverse stories. Thompson views this as bridging the gap between community narratives and their public presentation. Cables & Cameras has mentored over 100 young creatives, equipping them with skills for the creative industries. Thompson has curated numerous exhibitions and film screenings, including ‘Iconic Black Bristolians Portraits Exhibition’ and ‘The Bristol Sound On Screen’.

Thompson is co-author of ‘The Art and Sound of the Bristol Underground’ and has contributed to significant reports like the Bristol UNESCO City of Film Monitoring Report and ‘Go West! 2: Bristol’s Film and Television Industries’, establishing himself as a cultural historian, sub-cultures, film, and representation. With over two decades of experience, Thompson has collaborated with various cultural and educational institutions, advocating for greater representation and inclusivity in the creative industries across the South West and beyond. He is also associated with the Bristol University Caribbean Studies group.
